The Garden Route is South Africa's most iconic road trip: 300 kilometres of coastline, indigenous forest, lagoons, and mountain passes running from Mossel Bay to the Storms River mouth. Each town has its own character — George is the functional hub, Wilderness is the slow-life beach town, Knysna is oysters and that lagoon, Plettenberg Bay is where the money summers, and Tsitsikamma is where the forest finally swallows you whole.

This is one of those journeys where the drive itself is the attraction. The N2 past the Outeniqua Mountains, the Wilderness lagoon on your left, the sea crashing below the Robberg Peninsula — there are sections of this road that'll make you pull over just to look. You can rush it in a weekend or take a week and not run out of things to do. Most people wish they'd taken the week.

Best time to visit Garden Route

Oct – Apr. Summer delivers beach weather, long days, and the full outdoor activity menu. Shoulder months (Oct–Nov and Mar–Apr) are ideal — still warm, far fewer people. Winter is quiet and green — beautiful for hiking, fine for most activities.

Things to do in Garden Route

Bloukrans Bridge Bungee Jump — At 216m, this is the highest commercial bungee jump in the world. The bridge spans the Bloukrans River gorge in the heart of the Tsitsikamma forest. You see the sea from up here. Many people describe it as the best decision they ever made. A few describe it as the worst. Same experience — different constitutions. Tsitsikamma Canopy Tour — Eight zip-line slides through the ancient Tsitsikamma forest canopy, 30m above the forest floor. You glide from platform to platform between yellowwood trees that are older than most countries. The guides are exceptional, the forest is primeval. (From R1,095pp · book ahead in peak season)
Knysna Lagoon Boat Trip — Take a ferry or kayak to the Heads, do the Featherbed Nature Reserve hike, or just drift on the lagoon for an afternoon. Knysna's lagoon is one of the most photographed spots in South Africa, and it earns every shot. (Ferry from R280pp · kayak hire from R200/hr)
Cango Caves (Oudtshoorn) — A 40-minute detour over the Outeniqua Mountains into the Klein Karoo brings you to the Cango Caves: a 28-million-year-old dolomite cave system with chambers taller than a five-storey building. Robberg Peninsula Hike — A 9km circular hike on the peninsula outside Plettenberg Bay, with seals, dolphins, whale sightings (seasonal), and sea stacks. The full loop takes 3–4 hours and gives you some of the best coastal views on the entire route. Bring water. Go early. (R250pp conservation entry)
Wilderness Beach — Wilderness is the Garden Route's sleeper hit — a small, genuinely relaxed town with a long surf beach, the Touws River lagoon behind it, and none of the bustle of Plett or Knysna. Insider tips

Drive east to west (Storms River to Mossel Bay) if you're flying out of George — you end near the airport and get the best light on the mountains driving out of Tsitsikamma.
Knysna books out in December–January. If you're planning a summer trip, lock in accommodation 3–4 months ahead — the good lagoon-view places go fast.
The Outeniqua Pass between George and Oudtshoorn is one of the best mountain drives in the country. Worth the detour even if the Cango Caves aren't on the plan.
Plett and Knysna are competitors — most people pick one. Knysna is more town-centred with the lagoon and oyster bars; Plett is beaches and the bay. If forced to choose: Knysna.
The Otter Trail (5 days, Storms River to Nature's Valley) is one of South Africa's best hikes and books up to a year in advance. Worth planning a whole trip around if hiking is your thing.

Travel tips

Car Is Mandatory: There is no sensible public transport between Garden Route towns. Hire a car — a standard hatchback handles all the roads including the gravel sections. Book ahead in December.
Fuel Strategy: Fill up in George, Knysna, and Plett. Between Knysna and Tsitsikamma the options are limited — you can go 60km without a proper garage.
Whale Calendar: Southern right whales calve in Plettenberg Bay from June to November. September–October is peak season — they come incredibly close to shore from the Robberg Peninsula trail.
Oyster Season: The Knysna Oyster Festival runs every July. It's the best and worst time to visit — brilliant atmosphere, but accommodation doubles in price and the town is very busy. Book 6+ months ahead.
