Knysna accommodation
Oysters. Lagoon. Those Heads. Knysna, basically perfect.
Knysna is the Garden Route's beating heart — a proper little town built around a lagoon so beautiful it has become its own landmark. The Heads (two sandstone cliffs guarding the lagoon mouth) are the photo everyone posts. The oysters are the meal everyone comes back for. The pace is the thing everyone underestimates until they've been here for two days and cancelled the next leg of the trip to stay longer.
The lagoon feeds into a bay that feeds into the Indian Ocean, and Knysna backs up against dense indigenous forest that stretches north into the Outeniqua Mountains. There are hiking trails into the canopy, horse riding on the beach at Brenton, whale watching from the Heads in season, and a food scene that punches well above its population. It's a town that works for everyone from the five-year-old demanding ice cream on the waterfront to the couple doing a wine pairing at a forest restaurant.

Things to do in Knysna
- The Heads & Featherbed Reserve — Take the Featherbed ferry across the lagoon to the Western Head, hike to the viewpoint (2km uphill, worth every step), and look back at the town framed by water and forest. This is the view Knysna is famous for. It lives up to it. (Ferry + hike from R600pp · book ahead in peak season)
- Oyster Tasting at the Waterfront — Knysna oysters are farmed in the lagoon and served everywhere — but the waterfront restaurants, particularly Knysna Oyster Company and 34° South, do it best. Order them simply: fresh, half shell, lemon. The chefs here will dress them with too many things if you let them. (From R120 for 6 · waterfront restaurants from R150 a main)
- Lagoon Kayaking — Paddle out from the waterfront into the lagoon on a flat-bottomed kayak. On calm mornings the water mirrors the Heads and the surrounding forest. You can paddle to the mouth and watch the swells rolling through the narrow channel between the cliffs. Nothing motorised, nothing rushed. (Kayak hire from R200/hr · guided tours from R450pp)
- Brenton-on-Sea Beach — A 20-minute drive from town, Brenton is one of the great uncrowded beaches on the Garden Route. Long, white, backed by dunes, with serious enough surf to be interesting but swimmable if you pick your spot. Horse riding on the beach runs from here too — book through Brenton Horse Trails. (Free · horse rides from R450/hr)
- Knysna Forest Hike — The Knysna Forest is home to some of South Africa's last remaining wild forest elephants — a small, secretive herd that is rarely seen but whose presence shapes the whole walk. The Elephant Walk from Diepwalle is 18km; shorter 9km and 7km loops are available. Ancient yellowwood trees, complete quiet. (Free · parking R50 at Diepwalle Forest Station)
- Thesen Island Lunch — Thesen Island is a small, upmarket residential island accessible from town by a short bridge. There are a handful of excellent restaurants and coffee spots here — Dry Dock and Tao are local favourites. Come for lunch and stay for the lagoon light in the afternoon. (Restaurants from R150 a main)
Insider tips
- December is wonderful and completely overwhelming. The town triples in population, restaurants turn away walk-ins, and accommodation prices double. Book everything 4+ months ahead if you're going in peak summer.
- The Knysna Oyster Festival happens in late June/early July every year. It's the best party the town throws — but it books out even earlier than Christmas. Check the dates and plan around it if oysters are your thing.
- Leisure Isle is a little secret — a residential island in the lagoon accessible by a short road bridge. Drive around it in the late afternoon for some of the best lagoon-light photography you'll get.
- The Waterfront restaurants look great but walk one block inland and the value improves significantly. Île de Pain (the bakery) is the best breakfast in town and doesn't need a lagoon view to prove it.
- Wild weather can close the Heads to the ferry. If you have Featherbed booked and it's blowing hard, call ahead — they'll usually reschedule rather than cancel.
Travel tips
- Book Restaurants: Knysna's best restaurants (Île de Pain, Sirocco, The Drydock) fill up quickly in season. Book at least 2 days ahead in November–January. Walk-ins are hit or miss.
- Weather Windows: The Garden Route can rain in any month. Knysna gets the most — the forest needs it. Most activities are fine in light rain, but check the Featherbed ferry conditions before committing to that crossing.
- Base Your Trip: Knysna makes the best base for exploring the Garden Route. George (airport) is 1hr west, Plett is 30min east, Tsitsikamma is 1.5hrs. You can do day trips without repacking your bags.
- Swim Carefully: The lagoon looks calm but currents at the Heads can be powerful. Swim inside the lagoon proper — not at the Heads mouth. Brenton and Sedgefield beaches are safer surf options.
