Kruger National Park is one of the largest game reserves on earth — 19,485 square kilometres of bushveld running along the Mozambican border. It's home to the Big Five (lion, leopard, elephant, rhino, buffalo) and a catalogue of 500+ bird species, 150 mammals, and landscapes that go from rocky koppies to mopane woodland to the lush riverine forests of the south.

The park works on two levels: SANParks rest camps for self-drive visitors who want to braai under the stars and wake up to birdsong, and private reserves on the western boundary — Sabi Sand, Timbavati, Klaserie — where off-road driving and walking safaris are permitted and the Big Five sightings are almost guaranteed. Whichever you choose, Kruger delivers something very few places on earth still can: wild Africa, unfiltered.

Best time to visit Kruger National Park

May – Sep. Dry season — vegetation thins, animals congregate at waterholes, and the heat is bearable. June–August is peak. October shoulder is excellent value. Avoid the wet months (Dec–Feb) if Big Five sightings are the priority.

Things to do in Kruger National Park

• Self-Drive Big Five Safari — Hire a car or bring your own, buy a conservation fee day pass (R440 for foreign nationals, R232 for South Africans), and drive the park's 2,500km of roads at your own pace. Early morning (05h30–08h00) and evening (16h00–sunset) are the magic hours. The H4-1 between Lower Sabie and Crocodile Bridge is legendarily good. • Guided Morning Bush Walk — Walking with an armed ranger changes everything — suddenly you're reading tracks, smelling dung, identifying trees, and genuinely inside the ecosystem rather than observing it through glass. Most camps offer these at first light. Life-changing is not an overstatement. (R650–R900pp depending on camp)
• Sunset Game Drive — Camp-operated open vehicle drives into the park at dusk, when predators are most active. Your ranger communicates with a ranger network — when a leopard is spotted, they get the call. The first G&T in the bush after a lion sighting is a religious experience. (R400–R700pp through SANParks camps)
• Olifants River Viewpoint — The Olifants Camp sits on a cliff above the river — one of the great safari views in Africa. Hippos in the shallows, elephant crossing, crocs on the bank. Pull up a chair at the camp restaurant and you could watch all day. (Free with camp entry / day visitor pass)
• Private Reserve Upgrade (Sabi Sand) — The private reserves bordering the western fence offer off-road driving and night drives that SANParks camps don't allow. Leopard sighting rates at Sabi Sand are among the highest in Africa. Rates include accommodation, meals, and twice-daily game drives. (From R8,000–R30,000pp per night all-inclusive)
• Birding at Dawn — Kruger has 517 recorded bird species. The riverine forests near Lower Sabie and Pafuri in the far north are particularly exceptional. The lilac-breasted roller, martial eagle, and southern ground hornbill alone are worth the trip. SANParks issues a bird checklist — it becomes a mild obsession. Insider tips

• Book SANParks camps at least 6 months ahead for the June–August peak. The popular ones (Satara, Lower Sabie, Skukuza) sell out fast — online bookings open 11 months in advance.
• The animals don't read a schedule. Your best sightings will often be stopped on the road between camps, not on a guided drive. Drive slowly and stop often.
• Mosquitoes are real in summer — Kruger is malaria area. Take prophylactics (Malarone or Doxycycline) if visiting October–April. The dry season risk drops significantly.
• The Orpen Gate entrance is far less congested than Numbi or Paul Kruger Gate. If you're coming from JHB, Hoedspruit airport and Orpen is the most efficient combo.
• Fill up on fuel at every opportunity — camps can be 50–80km apart and some have limited or no fuel. Check the SANParks website before you drive.

Travel tips

• Malaria Awareness: Kruger is a malaria risk area, particularly October–April. Consult a travel clinic before you go. The dry season (May–September) has significantly lower risk, but cover up at dusk regardless.
• Sunrise Is Non-Negotiable: Gates open at 05h30–06h00 depending on the month. Be at the gate when it opens. The best sightings happen in the first two hours of light — and the light itself is extraordinary.
• Self-Drive vs Guided: Self-drive gives freedom; guided gives knowledge. The sweet spot is a mix: self-drive during the day, guided morning walk, guided night drive. You'll need multiple trips to exhaust Kruger anyway.
• Pack the Cooler: Braai culture is central to the SANParks camp experience. Most camps have outdoor fireplaces. Pick up meat at Skukuza or Hoedspruit, grab a local beer, and eat under the stars with hyenas calling in the distance.
